The Enthusiasts RFC was founded in 1969 almost by accident. What happened was, during the close seasons of 1968 and 1969, a steady stream of visiting British and French navy ships spent time in Trinidad and wanted to meet local sides. Those involved can never forget the three matches in three days over the 1969 New Year holidays against the French ships Victor Schoelcher and Jeanne D'Arc. These games, played at that time of year, more than anything else decided who were "Enthusiasts" and who were not! Normally, club sides were unavailable out-of-season since many of their members were either resting or playing other sports and it was left to a few enthusiastic players to get together to provide opposition. This procedure continued for sometime before the idea of forming a club was eventually discussed. Accordingly, Gavin Clark, Ken Moss, Victor Rodulfo, and Gerry Finch called a meeting at the Pelican Inn headquarters which was attended by more than 20 players. A decision was taken to form a club but it was stressed that players would continue to play for their own original club sides and would get together only for the special occasions of playing against and entertaining teams from overseas, espcially out-of-season. Founding members of the Club who gave excellent support as players and hosts were: David Josa, Alvin Koon How, Peter Dinnoo, Mickey Price, Reds Graham, Brian O'Farrell, Myles de Vries, Douglas Clarke, Richard Aanensen, Charlie Bailey and Peter de Montbrun. Later, Tony Charles and Gerry Rojas were invited to join the Club as a result of their rugby ability and sheer enthusiasm for the game. Easter tours were particularly popular in the early days, the first excursion taking place to Guadeloupe in 1971. Charlie Bailey was Captain of a squad of 17 players comprising Brian O'Farrell, Joffre Serrette, Lennox Lake, Knolly Moniquette, Roderick Tang Yew, Peter Ganteaume, Peter Dinnoo, David Butler, Tony Charles, Philip Manning, Wayne Decle, Victor Rodulfo, Barry Rudd, Douggie Clarke, Gerry Rojas and Gavin Clark. |
